Dr. Al Gorriaran is the Faculty lead for the Master’s in Human Resources Management program at the School of Business and Technology at Capella University. Dr. Gorriaran is a retired Army Human Resources Officer with twenty-two years in human resources, training and development and recruiting. Immediately after retirement he received teaching appointments in business and mathematics at Northwood University in West Palm Beach, Florida. In 2004, he entered the Foreign Service where he served at the following diplomatic missions: Skopje, Macedonia; Tirana, Albania; and Nogales, Mexico. In Skopje, and Tirana he served as the Human Resources Officer. While in Nogales, in addition to his other duties as Management Officer, he led the integration of the Drug Enforcement Agency into consulate operations while serving as deputy principal officer for administration. After serving in the Foreign Service, Dr. Gorriaran worked at the Smithsonian Institution as a human resources business partner and international HR advisor. In 2010, he joined Capella University as core faculty in the Master’s in HR program.
Dr. Gorriaran holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration and master’s degrees in business administration (Webster University), public administration (Troy University) and information technology (Keller Graduate School of Management). He has a doctorate in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University. He is also a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College, Army War College’s - Defense Strategy Course, Navy War College and the Human Resources/Financial Management and General Service courses at the US Department of State’s Foreign Service institute. Dr. Gorriaran is currently pursuing a PhD in information technology.
Dr. Gorriaran was a recipient of the following awards: Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Region 4, National Teaching Excellence Award (2017), Capella University, Presidents Award (2016), Capella University, Harold Abel Award (2014), The Smithsonian Institution Human Resources Performance Award (2010), US Department of State, Foreign Service, Meritorious Honor Award, (2007), US Department of State, Foreign Service, Franklin Award, (2006), Northwood University Florida Outstanding Faculty Award (2003) Northwood University Samuel R. Marotta Business Teaching Award (2002-3), Department of Defense, Meritorious Service Medal, (1997) and the US Army Meritorious Service Medal (3 Awards) (1990, 1992, 1999). Dr. Gorriaran lives in Bristow, VA, with his family.
